Monday, July 11

Wire Animals ~ Shaun Chown
Time: 9:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Join professional artist and visual arts educator Shaun Chown in a workshop where participants will create small sculptures of animals using wire. Students will form and attach bodies, heads, legs, tails, and finishing touches such as google eyes. They will also learn how to safely use small wire bending tools and hot glue guns under the instructor’s supervision.

The instructor will adjust the difficulty level and scope of the workshop based on the age of the participants.

Ceramics Decoration ~ Matt Cripps
Time: 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.

AX Ceramics Centre Coordinator and professional artist Matt Cripps will introduce children to basic ceramics decorating techniques. In this workshop, participants will use underglaze to decorate small dishes with their own designs. The finished products will be fired in the kiln and available for pickup at a later date.

Watercolour Painting ~ Shaun Chown

Join professional artist and visual arts educator Shaun Chown to learn watercolour painting techniques. Students will learn how warm colours and cool colours mix together, and will explore watercolour paints, pencils, crayons, brushes, painting surfaces, and techniques.

Making Dots with Yayoi Kusama ~ Martha Hallyburton
Time: 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Join art teacher Martha Hallyburton to learn techniques used by Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama. Participants will learn how to use simple dots to create intricate and beautiful pieces of artwork, and will look at Kusama’s dotted pumpkins and butterflies for inspiration. Martha will discuss with participants the use of lines, shapes, repetition and patterns. Students will produce artwork comprised of dots and patterns in the style of Kusama.

Introduction to Sewing by Hand ~ Shaun Chown

Join professional artist and visual arts educator Shaun Chown for an introduction to sewing by hand. Participants will learn how to sew a running stitch and a backstitch. They will also learn how to thread a needle, secure and end a seam, and sew on a button. There will be an introduction to decorative embroidery stitches if time allows. Students will create and take home a cute stuffed critter made from felt and other scrap materials.

Drawing Outdoors ~ Bonny Hill

Join professional artist Bonny Hill and spend the afternoon outdoors drawing Sussex architecture, beginning with pencil and finishing with marker and watercolour.

Drawing Skills ~ Shaun Chown

Join professional artist and visual arts educator Shaun Chown to learn the art of one-point and two-point perspective drawing. Using one-point perspective, participants will learn to draw a landscape like the famous Canadian artist, Alex Colville. Using two-point perspective, students will take one-point perspective to the next level by adding a second dimension to their drawings. In this class, participants will learn to create a skyline and will finish their drawings by learning about value, shading, and colour.

Impressionist Painting with Berthe Morisot ~ Martha Hallyburton

Join art instructor Martha Hallyburton to learn about the impressionist style of painting. Participants will practice applying vibrant colours to paper and canvas with separate brushstrokes and some pre-mixing. Students will then stand back from their artwork and allow their eyes to “merge” the results in an impressionist manner. Some examples of pioneering impressionist Berthe Morisot’s work will be used as inspiration.

Picasso Portraits ~ Shaun Chown

Join professional artist and visual arts educator Shaun Chown in a workshop inspired by Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Students will learn how Picasso pioneered Cubism and how he drew inspiration from African masks, and will create their own portrait in Cubist style using oil pastels and paper.
