Handbuilt Pottery for Beginners

September 12 – September 26

Have you ever wanted to try pottery? Well, now’s your chance! AX‘s new ceramics centre coordinator, Matt Cripps, is hosting Handbuilt Pottery for Beginners, a 3-day pottery workshop that will guide you through the process of creating your first pieces of pottery. This workshop will take place at AX on September 12 and 13 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and September 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Wearing a mask and following physical distancing rules are required at all times in AX and during the workshop.

Day 1, Saturday, September 12, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Introduction to handbuilt pottery with examples and demonstrations; begin creating work with direction from Matt.

Day 2, Sunday, September 13, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Add attachments to pieces made the previous day (handles, feet, etc.) explore decorating techniques, and create more work. After this class, you can take any of your remaining clay home – you’ll have one week to create additional pieces and Matt will coordinate a time for you to drop off what you’ve created to be fired in the kiln.

Day 3, Saturday, September 26, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Return to AX to decorate and glaze your works. After the work is fired a second time, Matt will coordinate a time for you to pick up your completed projects.

Please note that participants get to keep all of the work they create, and this workshop does NOT include using a pottery wheel.
